Preventive breast health care

Breast cancer is most treatable when caught early. Breast Surgeon Dr. Stacey Gutman recommends two steps for early diagnosis and intervention: breast self-awareness and annual mammograms.

What is breast self-awareness?

Breast self-awareness is knowing what’s normal for your breasts—their look, feel, and any patterns that are usual for you—so you can quickly notice if something changes.

Dr. Gutman recommends standing in front of a mirror before or after a shower. Look for changes like:

  • A new lump or mass
  • Swelling under the arm or collarbone
  • Skin irritation, dimpling, or swelling
  • Breast or nipple pain
  • Nipple turning inward
  • Redness, scaliness, or thickened skin
  • Warmth or itching
  • Nipple discharge (not breast milk)

If you notice anything unusual for your breasts, talk to your primary care provider.

Who should have an annual mammogram?

  • Every woman should have an annual mammogram beginning at age 40.
  • Women under the age of 40 with a family history of breast cancer should talk to their primary care provider about having a mammogram.

Schedule your screening mammogram today. No referral is required. Please call 218-878-7015 to make an appointment.

Breast Health FAQs
Do I need a referral for a mammogram?

No, a referral is not required for an annual screening mammogram. Please call 218-878-7015 to schedule an appointment.

Are mammograms safe?

Yes, mammograms are safe. The scan involves a very low dose of radiation, roughly equivalent to the natural radiation a person is exposed to over a few weeks to two months of normal living. Medical professionals widely agree that the life-saving benefits for early cancer detection outweigh the minimal radiation exposure.

I don’t have health insurance. How can I have a mammogram?

Minnesota’s Safe Breast & Cervical Cancer Screening Program offers no-cost mammograms at locations across the state, including CMH. To find out if you’re eligible, please call 1-888-643-2584.
