Volunteers from all walks of life and every local community choose to give their time and energy to Community Memorial Hospital/Sunnyside Health Care Center. They can be found serving in a multitude of ways, including assisting patients, delivering mail, menu service and meal delivery, providing transportation within the hospital, staffing the gift shop, playing cribbage with care center residents, maintaining facility gardens, taking Sunnyside residents on trips into the community, and distributing flowers. On Thursday afternoons, Junior Volunteers take a gift shop cart from room to room selling cards and gifts to residents and patients. Each Friday a “Snack Shop” is available for patients, staff and residents, completely staffed by our volunteers. Volunteers also lend support in a spiritual sense with Bible studies, services, music and the Grief Support Group. It’s our volunteers who put “community” in Community Memorial Hospital.
These are some of the reasons our active volunteers give their time to CMH. Men and women, ages 14 to 90 plus, contribute positively to life at the hospital and Sunnyside Heath Care Center. You, too, can choose from a multitude of jobs that suit your interests and provide a change of pace from your daily routine. Think about joining our team of active and enthusiastic volunteers. To apply, please download the CMH Application to Volunteer and follow the instructions.
The CMH Auxiliary Board manages the Gift Shop, holds fundraisers and provide services at the hospital, including caring for a bird aviary at Sunnyside Health Care Center, purchasing flowers for monthly birthday parties at Sunnyside, providing a daily newspaper for Sunnyside residents, awarding annual scholarships and funding other needs of the hospital and Sunnyside. Since 2004, the Auxiliary has given nearly $39,000 to CMH. Fundraisers have included Books-R-Fun, the “No-Bake” Sale, Purses for Nurses, sportswear sale, Lights of Love, Christmas boutique and bake sale, used book sale, B & B Market, Annual Garage Sale and Antiquities Photos.
As a way of saying “thank you” to volunteers, the Auxiliary provides a complimentary box lunch to all volunteers upon request whenever they are serving, free coffee or tea at the Volunteer Check-in Station, an annual appreciation brunch, and opportunities to attend the Minnesota State Hospital Volunteer Organization’s annual conference and the HCAM District B meetings.
