The Importance of Well-Child Visits

Posted by

Does it ever feel like your child grew an inch seemingly overnight? Children grow and change at a rapid pace. That’s why it’s important to have an annual check-in with your child’s healthcare provider.

A well-child visit is an opportunity to track your child’s physical, mental, and social development during the years when their brain and body are constantly changing.

Here’s what to expect at a well-child visit:

  • A head-to-toe physical examination
  • An opportunity to share successes and document milestones
  • Support and advice for any challenges your child is facing
  • Updates to required immunizations

How to prepare before the visit:

  • Make notes about changes you’ve noticed in your child’s health and development, including changes in behavior or routines.
  • Create a list of questions. If you have concerns or questions about your child’s health, write them down beforehand so you can make the most of your time with their healthcare provider.
  • Talk to your child about their upcoming visit. Prepare them by explaining that the doctor’s office is not a place to fear, but rather a place to check-up on their amazing growth.

Your child’s physician or provider is a partner in helping your child succeed. An annual visit helps you develop a parent-physician relationship based on respect, trust, and honest communication.

Get Your Sleep Studied at CMH

Posted by

March is National Sleep Awareness Month—a perfect time to reflect on the quality of zzzZZs you’re getting. Getting adequate sleep is critical to your wellbeing, both physically and mentally.

The average adult needs between 7-9 hours of sleep per night to be properly rested. However, many people experience trouble sleeping or wake up feeling tired. This could be due to sleep apnea—a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts. Symptoms of sleep apnea may include loud snoring, awakening with a dry mouth, daytime headaches, daytime sleepiness (regardless of how long you slept), or irritability.

When properly diagnosed, sleep apnea is easily treated. Diagnosis includes a sleep study, where your sleep will be monitored at our Sleep Clinic or from the comfort of your home. After being treated for sleep apnea, many people report a significant improvement not only in their sleep quality, but in their energy levels during the day.

If you think you may be suffering from sleep apnea, talk to your primary care provider about a sleep study. The current wait time for a sleep study at CMH is 30 days. Questions? Call our Sleep Clinic at 218-878-7043.

Time for a Colonoscopy?

Posted by

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. If you’re over the age of 45, now is a great time to ask your primary care provider about a colonoscopy.

Earlier onset is on the rise

According to an American Cancer Society study, the number of people under age 55 diagnosed with colorectal cancer has nearly doubled since 1995 despite this age group shrinking in the overall population. The cause of this rise is undetermined, but could be due to numerous genetic and/or environmental factors. That’s why it’s important not to delay screening.

  • Adults over the age of 45 should ask their primary care provider about colorectal cancer screening. A colonoscopy is recommended once every 10 years beginning at age 45.
  • Adults under the age of 45 with an increased risk of colorectal cancer should also talk to their provider about getting screened.
  • Adults of any age who are experiencing a change in bowel habits, blood in the stool, or abdominal pain that does not go away should talk to their provider about getting screened.

Screening saves lives

Many cases of colorectal cancer are preventable. Routine screening by colonoscopy can detect cancer in its early stages, when treatment is more likely to be successful. Any precancerous polyps discovered during a colonoscopy can be removed during the procedure, so they don’t develop into cancer later on.

A colonoscopy is a short, out-patient procedure. Most patients are at home resting within a matter of hours.

CMH’s current appointment wait time is one week for colonoscopies. Not a CMH patient, but want to take advantage of a short wait time? Ask your primary care provider about a referral to CMH.
