OB Simulator Training Program at the Cloquet Hospital

Advanced training for rural obstetrics providers

Community Memorial Hospital is happy to provide an OB Simulation Training Program to improve outcomes for moms and babies across the state of Minnesota. Utilizing some of the best technology and tools available on the market, and subsidized through the generosity of federal, state, and private grants, we can offer valuable training at an affordable cost.

Delivering safe, effective obstetric care in rural communities comes with unique challenges—from limited resources and specialist access to infrequent exposure to high-risk emergencies. Our OB Simulator Training Program is designed to equip rural healthcare providers with the hands-on skills, critical thinking, and confidence needed to manage complex obstetric situations—right where they practice.

This cutting-edge, evidence-based simulation training brings real-world obstetric emergencies to life, providing a safe, immersive environment to practice critical skills before they’re needed most.

Need Defined

Rural hospitals and clinics often serve as the only point of care for pregnant individuals across vast regions. However, providers in these settings face distinct obstacles:

  • Lower OB volumes leading to limited exposure to emergencies like shoulder dystocia, eclampsia, or postpartum hemorrhage
  • Limited access to on-call obstetric specialists, anesthesiologists, or surgical teams
  • Higher maternal morbidity and mortality rates compared to urban counterparts
  • Geographic isolation, which can delay transfer times during emergencies
  • Obstetric emergencies in the ERs of hospitals that do not offer labor and delivery services

Without ongoing, practical training, providers may be left underprepared for obstetric crises that require rapid, coordinated responses.

Solution

Our OB Simulator Training Program bridges the training gap by delivering high-fidelity simulation education tailored to the realities of rural obstetric care, including those without dedicated labor and delivery units. The program includes:

  • Portable, high-tech OB simulation equipment for realistic, hands-on learning
  • Scenario-based training modules covering a range of obstetric emergencies
  • Interdisciplinary team training, enhancing communication and collaboration
  • Specialized training for emergency departments, tailored to facilities that do not offer labor and delivery services
  • On-site or regional workshops, minimizing time away from work
  • Expert faculty with backgrounds in rural obstetrics

Participants leave with practical skills, enhanced clinical judgment, and greater readiness to respond to emergencies—helping improve patient outcomes and reduce provider burnout.

Target Audience

This program is designed for rural obstetric care teams, including:

  • Family physicians and general practitioners providing obstetric care
  • Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) and Labor & Delivery nurses
  • Rural hospital and clinic staff involved in perinatal and emergency care
  • Physician assistants and nurse practitioners working in maternal health
  • EMS personnel involved in obstetric transport and emergency delivery

Whether you’re delivering babies, stabilizing for transfer, or responding in the field, our OB Simulator Training Program ensures your team is prepared when every second counts.
