Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is a circulatory problem resulting from system atherosclerosis—or a buildup of plaque in the arteries.
This blockage causes inflammation of the arteries, which can reduce vital blood flow and oxygen supply to your organs and extremities.
Symptoms of PAD
People with PAD may be asymptomatic or have intermittent claudication (IC), which includes activity induced pain, aching, or cramps of the calves, thighs or buttocks. This pain typically resolves after a few minutes of rest or 5–10 minutes of sustained activity.
Are you at risk of developing PAD?
The chance of developing PAD increases as you age. One in twenty adults over age 50 and one in five over age 70 will develop PAD. Your risk increases with these factors:
- Abnormal blood cholesterol
- African American ethnicity
- Coronary artery disease
- Current or previous tobacco use
- Diabetes
- Heart attack
- Heart disease
- High blood pressure
- Stroke
What should I expect at a PAD Program session?
CMH’s PAD Program follows national guidelines for modifying exercise to reduce the symptoms of PAD. A typical session includes:
- Treadmill walking
- Establishing a pain threshold and sticking to it, instead of stopping
- Continuous assessment and encouragement from staff
