The Importance of Well-Child Visits
Does it ever feel like your child grew an inch seemingly overnight? Children grow and change at a rapid pace. That’s why it’s important to have an annual check-in with your child’s healthcare provider.
A well-child visit is an opportunity to track your child’s physical, mental, and social development during the years when their brain and body are constantly changing.
Here’s what to expect at a well-child visit:
- A head-to-toe physical examination
- An opportunity to share successes and document milestones
- Support and advice for any challenges your child is facing
- Updates to required immunizations
How to prepare before the visit:
- Make notes about changes you’ve noticed in your child’s health and development, including changes in behavior or routines.
- Create a list of questions. If you have concerns or questions about your child’s health, write them down beforehand so you can make the most of your time with their healthcare provider.
- Talk to your child about their upcoming visit. Prepare them by explaining that the doctor’s office is not a place to fear, but rather a place to check-up on their amazing growth.
Your child’s physician or provider is a partner in helping your child succeed. An annual visit helps you develop a parent-physician relationship based on respect, trust, and honest communication.
